Destination Infinity Fire Effect Image using Inkscape Spray and Blur Effect with Inkscape Graphic toolGlossy Green Colour effect with Inkscape 3D glossy text using InkscapeI guess, that was not bad for a beginner trying to learn this graphics tool. Inkscape is an open source project, which means its free to download and use! Its easy to download and use it in my Linux Mint Operating System. I guess they should be having a windows version as well!

What’s interesting about Inkscape is, it uses SVG – Scalable Vector Graphics as its native format (The above images are not SVG, I exported them to png). The SVG is an interesting and an important image format that is gaining a lot of popularity in the recent times. It is an open source standards based format that can render text, images, animations etc, and is written in xml which is very Internet friendly.

Moreover, all the graphic images created by this format are scalable – If you create a jpeg or a bmp image in any program, define a size and later on open it in a image viewer and try to view it in a bigger size, there would be some distortion (blurry or broken images). But SVG is not based on pixels, its based on shapes and hence you can expand or contract it to any size and still it retains the basic shape!

This web-page is inspired from the core philosophy of Open Source, which is avoiding duplication of work. If a piece of code has already been written by someone and many others need to write the same code (for their own applications or part of their applications).

There is no point in each one writing the same code for multiple purposes (It wastes a lot of time and energy) and hence Open Source believes that code (or anything else) should be freely available to everyone so that they can re-use it fully or in part to complete their work quickly and easily. That’s why I am making all my Happy Deepavali images available to the general public.

I guess this Open Source philosophy is worthy of consideration by all people. In that spirit, if some one wants an image or a photo, it does not make sense for people to travel across to the site and take photos again, when the required photo is already available! More over, most of the graphic tools I use to come up with images and photo manipulation are open source based and available to me free of any cost!

There are even detailed blog posts by wonderful souls across the world on how to use the various open source applications! There are, Of course, many cons of this approach as well, but we need to draw the line somewhere, and I guess its up to individuals to define their own philosophies.

Happy Diwali to you DI 🙂 🙂

Thanks for the info on Inkscape and SVG… very interesting 🙂 🙂

and I am trying to use it… GIMP is another good open source tool…

Good Kanagu, more people should use the Open Source tools – its not only free but it offers a great opportunity to learn new things. Since I do not edit photos, I am not using GIMP at present. I have used it and have found it slightly difficult when compared to Inkscape and Dia – two of my favorite graphical editors

    Down with CAPTCHA!!

p.s. how was your diwali? mine was spent in Goa.

I spent it in my home in Coimbatore… nothing like sleeping lazily and spending time 🙂 Only the sound of crackers was a small disturbance, but for me, not much…
