Can Anyone Travel 100,000 KM across 5 Continents on a Bike?

[Comments ON]

Meet Jay Kannaiyan. Of JamminGlobal.com.

Like many, he too left Chennai to pursue the American Dream. But after sometime, he decided to return home. In style.

Instead of taking a flight and coming home in a couple of days, he decided to ride a two-wheeler (Suzuki DR650) across many countries on five continents and finally reached India after 3 years.

Now that’s what I call a journey! πŸ™‚

I was reading the Economic Times Magazine today morning, and I was taken aback while reading about this daring person and his great journey.

Will you or I take a journey like this? Heck, I think five times and double-check preparations before taking that paltry 90 KM journey from Chennai to Kanchipuram on my bike! This post is not about my bravery, anyway πŸ˜›

Think about some of the problems – One needs to stay somewhere every night for 3 years, petrol doesn’t come cheap, one needs to eat three times a day, one needs to procure visas for each country, one needs to ship the bike across continents, one needs to protect themselves against muggers and animals, one needs to survive extreme heat and extreme cold, one needs to… OMG – there are so many hurdles!

Fortunately, at least one man from India did not look at these things as hurdles. He looked at them as an adventure – an adventure of a lifetime!

And while on that journey, he continues his education & completes a long-distance degree on Sustainable Development!

Enough said. If you want to get a glimpse of one small part of his adventurous journey, have a look at this photo-essay across Argentina. Of course, his blog is full of such photo essays, all over the world!

I think, all of us need to take up an adventure of such magnitude, at least once in our lives. What say?

The journey must have been awesome and a precious life experience. πŸ™‚ I could have considered such adventure but I am a bad driver. I think Train will work for me. πŸ˜‰

I think someone went all across India on a train and wrote a book on it, recently! But adventures don’t have to be traveling around India/World. We can very well stay at home and still be adventurous. We may just need to do something very different from others, that’s all πŸ™‚

Yes, the learnings that we get from such experiences are priceless. We can learn so much about other people and more importantly, ourselves.

Sometimes, when we take up very difficult adventures, the normal travails of life might seem easier. That’s the benefit πŸ™‚

I am glad he had a nice experience. What was the purpose of this journey and what did he achieve?

    1. Rajesh K

He says (in his site) that the purpose of the journey is career-shift, learn about people/sustainable practices/systems practiced in other developing countries, and most importantly, to have one big adventure.

I think that when we stretch ourselves to do such incredibly difficult and challenging things, our problem-solving abilities will improve and we look at things in a broader perspective.

What a wonderful read this was! I agree with you about broadening perspectives.

I watch some people trying to re-create Motorcycle diaries in their own way and it is so inspiring to see people push themselves that way.

I want to do something like this – it is just so overwhelming an experience!

    1. Rajesh K

Motorcycle diaries was a short trip, compared to this! I think taking such adventures is quite normal in western countries, but we need a mindset change for such things to get accepted in India. The biggest problem is safety, of course.

It is a saga of courage, tenacity, endurance, flexibility and high physical stamina. It is not for weaklings of body and heart. The pictures are great and show the hurdles.Has he brought out a book?

    1. Rajesh K

I don’t know – maybe not. I think he should bring out a book – picture book or something… We can suggest it in his blog.

wow wish I had the courage to do something like that in life πŸ™‚ I feel he should publish his experience as a book.

    1. Rajesh K

Yes. I too need (a lot of) courage to even think about doing such things. Now, doing is another different matter altogether πŸ™‚
