Marina Open 3 [2019]: WheelChair Tennis Event @ Chennai

The third edition of Marina Open 3, a wheelchair tennis tournament, is scheduled to be held at Chennai from Aug. 7 – 10, 2019. People with walking impairments, who are wheelchair-bound, learn to play tennis sitting on their wheelchairs and compete against each other on a regular tennis court.

This is an individual event and this year about 65 participants are expected to be in the fray for the title and prize money of approx. 30,000 INR for the winner.

L&T is the title sponsor for this event and Astha Foundation/IWTT is the organizer. Here is the promo video I made to promote this event.

This event is being organized at the SDAT Tennis Stadium complex at Nungambakkam and everyone is welcome to see. There is no entry fee. The final matches and prize distribution ceremony will be held on Aug. 10, 2019 (Sat) so try to make it on that day, if you are not free on weekdays.

The following video filmed by me during the press meet event at Madras Cricket Club, Chepauk Stadium on Aug. 2, shows the highlights of the message conveyed by people like Vijay Amritraj, Sunil Jain, etc.

Here is the Schedule for the Final Matches of Marina Open 3 Tournament on Aug. 10, 2019 (Sat):

9.30 A.M.: Men’s Doubles Finals will be played between [Seed 1] Shekar Veeraswamy (KA) / S. Balachandar (TN) and [Seed 2] K Karthik (TN) / Mariappan D (TN) followed by Women’s Singles Finals between Prathima Rao (KA) and Shilpa K. P (KA)

Cool. Wish I were in Chennai to watch this tournament. Looks like all the players (I mean finalists) are either from Tamil Nadu or Karnataka. I could not hear what Vijay was saying. May be I have a hearing problem.

The sport is being encouraged mostly in the three southern states. So the players are currently from here. Hope this initiative spreads to other parts of India.
