Why are Cinema Halls Empty? #BacktoMovieTheatres

Recently, we went to Rohini Complex theatre in Chennai. It’s a popular cinema hall/destination for movie buffs here. We went by around 9 PM on a Saturday for the night show.

I agree that night shows are not that packed, but there should have been a considerable amount of outgoing crowd from the evening shows? Unfortunately, we saw a very few.

There are at least six theatres in that complex. When I was in my college, I remember we struggled to get tickets in the same complex. We had to travel to the theatre twice – once for advance booking, and once for the actual show.

Sometimes we didn’t get tickets and had to travel twice for the advance booking! For a few blockbuster movies with big stars, we had to wait for days and had to know someone in the ‘inside’ to get ticketrs!

For us, the advance booking visit to theatres with friends was fun. I wonder then, even with the convenience of online bookings, why the current generation of youth finds it difficult to visit theatres??

Have they found so many other activities that are even more fun? Maybe they think they can eventually watch the movie on OTT? Maybe they think the food cost in Theatres are high (which maybe true in Malls, but not in individual theatres like this)? Are they so busy with studies and work? Are there no good movies releasing nowadays? Are there too many cinema theatres in the city?

Why are Cinema Halls Empty?

Why are movie theatres attracting less crowd nowadays? If you have a clue, let me know in the comments section.

We need to start a movement to change the situation: #BacktoMovieTheatres
