My Autobiography: Kho kho!
I don’t know if you are familiar with this game, but we used to play it when we were studying 5th / 6th standard. I now wonder why it was familiar in that school alone – I did not play this before, and did not play this afterwards as well!
In Kho-kho, there is a rectangular field and people of one team sit in opposite directions in the middle line. Three people of another team get into the field. Members of the sitting team start chasing the three of them (one by one) and need to get all of them out. The team that gets maximum people out in a given period of time wins. You can see this 2 min video to understand better (Actually the guy evades the chasers quite well).
When I was in sixth standard, two interesting things happened. Since, I was considered to be a good runner, I was a part of the sixth standard team. One day after school hours, we played against the seventh standard team. They had some much better runners than ours. But maybe since we practiced more, we won! The PT masters and the seventh standard guys were shocked! Actually there was one guy in our team and it was very difficult to get him out (of course, it was not me!) and I think it was because of him we won.
Our seniors were pretty much irked by the result and they challenged us to play one more match. But why would we want to fore-go our record? We refused sternly and for the rest of the year we were pretty much undefeated by them (Because we didn’t play themΒ again π ). Maybe the current world no. 1 ranked Indian test cricket team can learn how to retain rankings from us! π
Some other day, during a PT period we played boys vs girls. For some reason, guys asked me to go and request the girls for a kho-kho match, and the girls in my class were sportive enough to accept the challenge.
So, the girls were chasing us first. I, along with two others got in to the field. As you might have guessed, I and another guy got out pretty fast. But the guy whom I mentioned in the above 6th Vs 7th Standard match, just did not get out for the full duration of their chase! And then, we chased the girls – Everyone were out well within the fixed duration!
I want to mention this here because – In the quest for equality, girls might have over scored boys in exams (mainly due to mugging), girls might have out-shined guys in IT jobs (mainly because of copy-paste, testing, excel sheet updation, code maintenance and absolute lack of innovation in that field), but it should go on record that AT SOME TIME IN HISTORY ONE SIXTH STANDARD GIRLS TEAM LOST TO ONE SIXTH STANDARD BOYS TEAM IN COMPETITIVE KHO-KHO (PLAYED VERY FAIRLY) AND THAT RESULT CANNOT BE REVERSED AND IT IS ETCHED IN MY BLOG NOW – HA! π

These articles are a part of my marketing efforts to sell my Autobiography which I am going to write after 31 years (when I am 60 years old). It will come out in the name of ‘Destination Infinity’, so please buy it π
yes in school used to play
sm, that was fast! I did not even finish editing when your comment came!
‘But why would we want to fore-go our record? We refused sternly and for the rest of the year we were pretty much undefeated by them (Because we didnβt play them again )’ – hahaha!
We were playing Kho kho in our school and I was thinking that it was a girls’ game! I remember it vividly, even now!
How come no IT girl has commented here?! Let me display it in facebook and invite them for war!
Well, it applies to both IT girls and IT guys – So there is no discrimination, actually. In that school, both boys and girls used to play kho-kho quite rigorously. That was the only school which took their sports seriously. Every other school was intent in spoon-feeding the children for better marks who would go on to become IT wizards! π

Oh..please invite other IT girls… I am in π
Haahaa ! Brava ! I remember playing Kho-Kho but it was always a girls-boys mixed team .
I remember chess was the only sport(?) where girls and boys play against each other. All the other games had separate teams and separate events.

I remmeebr playing it maybe one or twice thats it .. though have seen it a lot it was quiet popular in rural punjab tooo…
and yes why fore go the record no wayyyyyyyyyyy π
well done
Bikram’s
Kho-kho being popular in rural Punjab is news to me. Kho-kho is fun to play, I loved it back then. And about defeating the 7th std students, we were pretty sure that it was a one-time-lucky incident! If we had played them once again, we would have most probably lost!

Same pinch i used to play Kho-kho in my school and won few certificates too.
It was always girls vs girls and boys vs boys but never girls vs boys in my school.Well done u won…
CANNOT BE REVERSED AND IT IS ETCHED IN MY BLOG NOW β HA—Yeah yeah it is etched and we all read it…… π π π
Because boys don’t score more than girls you cant say that girls mug up…
The Kho-kho matches mentioned here were all unofficial matches played in PT period, after school hours, etc. The certificate winning matches were conducted only for seniors, not for us. Its good that you got some certificates, I never got any for Kho-kho!
Ok, the few boys who score as much as girls in exams also mug up π
Destination Infinity
Hahah….do I sense a bit of sour grapism here? π π π
Boys always welcome fair competition, but majority of them don’t like mugging competition – that’s why we don’t compete. Yeah, we agree that we don’t have a photographic memory and we are happy with sour grapes π

Yeah..I used to play kho kho in school during the games lesson specially in the 4th and 5th standard.
I think you are being a bit harsh on the girls in this post. I think most of the guys do pretty much the same thing. Only a handful of the population actually “innovates”.
I agree to your statement that irrespective of the gender, there is no / extremely less innovation in the Indian IT sector. And don’t take my posts too seriously, there is always subtle humor somewhere π

π well a good kho kho player or not, you are a good marketeer for your autobiography and as i have always said, i will buy it… if not for its content, then at least to return the favour π π
You will buy it for its content – Don’t worry π

Landed here while going through one of your comment at Google+ .
Your this post really reminded me of my schooling days when I got selected for House teams for KHO-KHO. The “best” thing happened when I was selected to represent school’s team for our REGIONAL MEET of Kendriya Vidyalaya(s) – Western Region. My dad was not at all interested to send his son for “Kho-Kho” which didn’t appealed to him against “Cricket” or “Football”………
And for regional meet our Trainer (PT/Games) got us to practice with the Girls Team. The guy didn’t realized that at Regional Meet we have to play with good teams and more to it we’ve to play with Boys teams and not with any girls team. Our Boys team failed miserably at the Regional Meet!!!! All due to the thought of that trainer that the girls are “at par” with us!
Sorry, I stretched my story so far…..thanks for bearing with me. Actually will not get another chance to talk about Kho-Kho – so THANKS A LOT RAJESH K
Well, training just before an event is just a small influencing factor deciding victory/ failure. We never had any opportunity to train at all! Good to see a fellow Kho-kho enthusiast π
