Ajanta Caves in Aurangabad district, Maharashtra, Western India is a World Heritage site and ASI protected monument. These rock-cut caves were constructed at various periods in between 2nd Century BCE to 6th Century CE and were used as a place of teaching by Buddhist monks. Ajanta Caves are very popular for their exotic setting, extensive  paintings & brilliant sculptures. Lost to the world until 19th century (after they were abandoned), these caves were rediscovered by a British officer.
